Dedication to the Ringneck - Pheasants Forever
| What's not to love about upland hunting and the backbone of the upland hunting tradition is the ringneck pheasant. The ringneck pheasant has 13 different colors and is truly one of God's great creations. My love for pheasant has more to do with bonding with friends, family and my dog than anything. I have the utmost respect the bird as does anyone who's tried to hunt him. He's smart, fast and has nature on his side. The pheasant arrived to North America in 1882 after the advance of settlers and the horse and plow made it hard for the native wildfowl, such as sharp-tailed grouse, to survive. Wildfowl hunters called for a sporting game bird that would be self-propagating, pleasing to the palate, and ale to thrive in close association with agriculture. Judge Owen Denny imported approximately fifty pheasants to his home in Oregon, starting a tradition of hunting that (in my opinion) is like no other. Just ten years after Denny brought the ringneck to Oregon, the first opening day was had and an estimated 50,000 birds were harvested that year. The Oregon example is proof that this bird is able to self populate at great rates so please do what you can to support the tradition of this wonderful bird. Whether you support land conservation when you vote next or you make a tax deductible donation to Pheasants Forever, please do something to support this truly amazing work of nature! |
